Wynboer Tips for February

1 Planning

  • Keep comprehensive records of inter alia the irrigation, ripening (°B ) and productions of each block.
  • Order cover crop seed.
2 In the vineyard

Harvest:

  • Contact your cellar before harvesting any vineyard or changing to another cultivar.
  • Harvest at the coolest time of the day - mechanical harvesting after 2 am.
  • Do not leave the grapes in the harvest bin overnight.
Disease and pest control:

  • Persist with the necessary preventive programmes where necessary, but keep to withholding periods.
  • Avoid high applications of copper shortly before the harvest.
  • Post-harvest disease control only to maintain healthy leaves.
Irrigation:

  • Pre-harvest - abundant water supply as well as water shortages are detrimental to quality.
  • Post-harvest - supplement the soil profile to its full depth.
Fertilisation:

  • Wait ± three to four weeks after the harvest.
Canopy management:

  • Tip actively growing shoots of late cultivars.
Root pruning:

Only to alleviate compaction, directly after the harvest in alternate rows before applying post-harvest fertilisation and irrigation. Note: Soils must be moist before root pruning action is undertaken. 3 Financial

Contact your agricultural economist for information about:

  • Purchase of soil or farm evaluation.
  • Viability studies and breakeven analyses.
  • Establishment, planning and cost.
  • Budgets and cash flow statements.
Compare, on a monthly basis, the budgeted situation with actual expenses as well as with the corresponding month of the previous year and make adjustments if required.
