Wynboer Tips for February
1 Planning
- Keep comprehensive records of inter alia the irrigation, ripening (°B ) and productions of each block.
- Order cover crop seed.
2 In the vineyard
Harvest:
- Contact your cellar before harvesting any vineyard or changing to another cultivar.
- Harvest at the coolest time of the day - mechanical harvesting after 2 am.
- Do not leave the grapes in the harvest bin overnight.
Disease and pest control:
- Persist with the necessary preventive programmes where necessary, but keep to withholding periods.
- Avoid high applications of copper shortly before the harvest.
- Post-harvest disease control only to maintain healthy leaves.
Irrigation:
- Pre-harvest - abundant water supply as well as water shortages are detrimental to quality.
- Post-harvest - supplement the soil profile to its full depth.
Fertilisation:
- Wait ± three to four weeks after the harvest.
Canopy management:
- Tip actively growing shoots of late cultivars.
Root pruning:
Only to alleviate compaction, directly after the harvest in alternate rows before applying post-harvest fertilisation and irrigation. Note: Soils must be moist before root pruning action is undertaken.
3 Financial
Contact your agricultural economist for information about:
- Purchase of soil or farm evaluation.
- Viability studies and breakeven analyses.
- Establishment, planning and cost.
- Budgets and cash flow statements.
Compare, on a monthly basis, the budgeted situation with actual expenses as well as with the corresponding month of the previous year and make adjustments if required.
