Wynboer Tips for April

1. Planning

  • Compile a thorough evaluation of each block's profitability and re-evaluate your long term planning.
  • Obtain establishment advice in collaboration with soil scientist, viticulturist and winemaker.
  • Confirm planting material ordered for 2004 and forward your needs for 2005 to your nursery.
2. In the vineyard

Cultivation

  • Weed control of perennial weeds with spot spraying.
  • Prepare a shallow seed bed for cover crops and sow cover crops after the first rains.
Post-harvest fertilisation
  • Apply N-fertilisation according to vigour and the other elements according to soil analyses or medium term fertilisation programme (lime + phosphates).
Post-harvest irrigation
  • Monitor soil moisture conditions and irrigate directly after harvest.
Disease and pest control
  • Post-harvest spraying programme is essential to maintain leaves where oidium and downy mildew infections occur.
  • Good time for nematode control.
  • Mark vines that are infested with mealy bug for control.
Uprooting of vines
  • Remove old vine roots as much as possible.
3. Financial

Contact your agricultural economist for information about:

  • Purchase of soil or farm evaluation.
  • Viability studies and breakeven analyses.
  • Establishment, planning and cost.
  • Budgets and cash flow statements.
Compare, on a monthly basis, the budgeted situation with actual expenses as well as with the corresponding month and make adjustments if required.
