Wynboer Tips for May

1. Planning

  • Review overall farm planning.
  • Finalise and confirm planting material to be ordered from nursery.
  • Plan maintenance of trellises, implements and machinery.
2. In the vineyard

Soil preparation and drainage

  • Have soil analysed by experts for the correct chemical and physical adjustments.
  • Do soil preparation at optimal soil moisture conditions with suitable implements.
  • Install drainage systems in wet soils.
Pest control
  • Apply snail bait after autumn rains to limit snail populations.
  • Take soil samples for nematode analyses if required.
  • Ant control.
Pruning

Pre-pruning

  • May be done if vines are trellised in order to distribute labour.
  • Prune shoots approximately 50 cm from basis.
Clean pruning - late May
  • This is the most important pruning action, therefore use properly skilled labourers.
  • Remove all shoots except bearers.
Final pruning - July

General

  • Control quick grass and other perennial weeds. Be aware not to spray green / yellow leaves and or shoots with weedicide.
  • Start erecting trellises in young vineyards.
3. Financial

Contact your agricultural economist for information about:

  • Purchase of soil or farm evaluation.
  • Viability studies and breakeven analyses.
  • Establishment costs, budgets and cash flow statements. Compare, on a monthly basis, the budgeted situation with actual expenses as well as with the corresponding month and make adjustments if required.
