Wynboer Tips for June
1. Planning
- Plan the necessary actions with regard to general maintenance of irrigation systems, farm implements, trellis systems, etc.
- Draw up weed control programme for coming season.
2. In the vineyard
Pest control
- Snail bait must still be applied every 2 - 3 weeks.
- Ensure that mealybug infested vines are marked for control.
Pruning
- Start pruning according to planning.
- The pruning system must be adapted to cultivar, location and wine goal.
- Keep renewal of built-up bearers in mind.
- Postpone pruning in frost sensitive areas.
Vine development
- Vine development must be done by labourers with the most pruning experience.
- Judge young vines according to their growth and plan the strategy for handling young vines in conjunction with your viticulturist.
Irrigation
- Heavy irrigation with good quality water to flush out brack salts.
Cover crops
- If required the cover crop should receive top dressing of nitrogen.
General
- Contact your nursery to make arrangements for collection of vines.
- Irrigation and trellis system must be installed before planting.
- Remove scion roots around trunks.
(Don't forget to make hunting arrangements!!!)
3. Financial
Contact your agricultural economist for information about:
- Purchase of soil or farm evaluation.
- Viability studies and breakeven analyses.
- Establishment costs, budgets and cash flow statements.
Compare, on a monthly basis, the budgeted situation with actual expenses as well as with the corresponding month and make adjustments if required.
