Wynboer Tips for August

1. Planning

  • Plan herbicide program as well as spring fertiliser and spraying programmes and order the necessary products. Always take the IPW guidelines into account.
2. In the vineyard Calibrate spraying pump and fertiliser sprayer.

Pest control

  • The emphasis should be on correct mealybug control before budding. Ensure that the prescriptions for winter treatment are followed stringently, otherwise control will not be successful.
  • Control snails if problematic.
Pruning
  • Vineyards in frost sensitive areas may be pruned clean in one action as late as possible.
  • If budding stimulants are applied 3 - 5 weeks before budding, a good synergistic action is obtained if the pruning (in one action) and application of budding stimulants follow as closely as possible on each other.
Herbicide and/or cultivation
  • Herbicide must be sprayed full surface with a systemic spray before budding. If using pre-emergence herbicide, be fully aware of the requirements for successful control as well as any accompanying dangers.
  • Cover crops must be sprayed and then preferably flattened to ensure the best dry material retention.
Planting of vines
  • Attempt to complete planting before the end of August.
  • Replacement vines should be kept on hand to be used this year in instances where vines did not take.
Fertilisation
  • A fertilisation programme should be drawn up for each block on the farm in consultation with a fertiliser expert and/or viticultural consultant.
  • If chicken fertiliser is used, it may be applied now.
Irrigation
  • Maintenance and chloronation of irrigation system must be undertaken.
  • Supplement soils to field capacity before budding, except in instances where a deficit irrigation strategy could possibly require otherwise.
3. Financial

Contact your agricultural economist for information about:

  • Purchase of soil or farm evaluation.
  • Viability studies and breakeven analyses.
  • Establishment planning and costs.
  • Budgets and cask flow statement.
Compare, on a monthly basis, the budgeted situation with actual expenses as well as with the corresponding month and make adjustments if required.
