Wynboer Tips for September
1. Planning
- Check, fix and clean all irrigation systems and apparatus.
- Calibrate spraying pumps and order fungicides and herbicides for pest and disease control.
2. In the vineyard
Planting of vines
- Keep vines for replacement on hand in plastic bags to use in places where last year's vines did not take.
Disease - pest control
- Start preventative spraying at 5 - 10 cm shoot length against fungal diseases such as oidium and downy mildew.
- Apply ant control before budding.
- Lime sulphur may be applied against erinose at the same stage.
- Control snails if problematic.
Irrigation
- If the soil is dry, give supplementary irrigation to the full depth of the soil profile before budding.
- Beware of over irrigation early in the season - vines use less water.
- Monitor soil water with appropriate equipment.
Fertiliser
- Wait ± three to four weeks after budding (±15 - 20 cm shoot length) before spring fertiliser is applied if at all necessary.
Sucker
- Start suckering at 5 - 10 cm shoot length. Remove all shoots in undesirable positions.
Soil management
- Cover crops must be sprayed and preferably flattened to ensure the best water retention especially under dry winter conditions.
3. Financial
Contact your agricultural economist for information about:
- Viability studies and breakeven analyses.
- Presentations on the economics of wine grape cultivation, industry overview, etc.
- Budgets and financial planning in the light of production cost, establishment cost and other industry parameters.
- Participation in the production plan/study groups.
Compare, on a monthly basis, the budgeted situation with actual expenses as well as with the corresponding month and make adjustments if required.
