Wynboer Tips for December

1. Planning

  • Make arrangements for soil preparation (soil samples and contractors).
  • Plan plantings and order vines for forthcoming planting season.
  • Make provision for labour requirements for the pressing season.
2. Vineyard programme

Irrigation

  • Monitor soil water conditions and vine symptoms for irrigation scheduling.
Disease control
  • Emphasis on preventative control of oidium, downy mildew and botrytis especially.
Pest control
  • Monitor mealybug and control where necessary.
Vine development
  • Complete shaping of cordon (green shoot method) and tipping of shoots.
  • Crop control of young vines bearing for the first time.
Canopy management
  • Pay attention to tipping actions, foliage density.
  • Place foliage wires in position to support shoots.
  • If the canopy is too dense, break out leaves judiciously.
  • Remove green bunches and bunches showing poor colour at 80% véraison.
3. Financial

Contact your agricultural economist for information about:

  • Viability studies and breakeven analyses.
  • Presentations on the economics of wine grape cultivation, industry overview, etc.
  • Budgets and financial planning in the light of production cost, establishment cost and other industry parameters.
  • Participation in the production plan/study groups.
