VISION 2020 FOR THE SA WINE INDUSTRY
By the end of 2000 a long term strategy will be in place which will take the South African wine industry into the new millennium. Vision 2020 is the outflow of a need, expressed by the most important role players in the industry, to formulate a long term vision regarding the road ahead for the wine industry.
Nowadays international competition is determined by technological development and in the long term the South African wine industry will only be able to flourish world-wide if the best quality wines, brandies and grape-based products are offered to the continously changing international market.
Initially the focus fell on wine only, but after consideration it was decided to include brandy and grape-based products in the vision. The project will be managed by WINETECH, the association of the most important role players in the wine industry, namely the Cape Wine and Spirits Institute (CWSI), the Cape Wine Estate Producers Association, the Co-operative Wine Cellars Committee, the Independent Wine Growers' Association, KWV and the National Research Foundation.
WINETECH's goal is to establish a flourishing SA wine industry through active participation by all role players in the wine industry. The support of the wine industry through individual expertise, training and education will ensure a technological frame of reference and world leadership in certain niche areas of the wine industry. By facilitating the development of resource limited producers, the project will benefit previously disadvantaged role players.
The Vision 2020 project will develop an SA wine industry strategy which:
- proposes a realistic but exciting long term vision
- compiles a framework of conduct and procedures to realise this vision
- provides clear strategic guidelines for the development of the wine, brandy and grape-based sectors of the industry
- draws up a consolidated strategy for these 3 sectors' mutual interests
- ensures outlines for each of the role players to help accomplish the vision
The WINETECH VISION 2020 project comprises 4 phases of approximately 6 months each. The first 2 phases consist of the evaluation of the current situation in the wine industry and the last 2 phases will address the shaping of the wine industry's future.
The first 2 phases' investigation will be presented as 4 reports, namely:
- WINE INDUSTRY FUTURE VISION
- WINE SCENARIOS 2020
- BRANDY SCENARIOS 2020
- GRAPE-BASED PRODUCTS SCENARIOS 2020
The findings of the last 2 phases will be presented as follows:
- WINE STRATEGY 2020
- BRANDY STRATEGY 2020
- GRAPE-BASED PRODUCTS STRATEGY 2020
- WINE INDUSTRY STRATEGY 2020
(An integrated report of the previous three.)
The typical activities of a project of this nature include data collection, as well as analysis and interpretation of data, followed by scenario development and strategic planning. However, the successful completion and implementation of this kind of project depend exclusively on the dedicated support of all role players in the industry. Task forces, expert specialist committees and industry forums, all of whom are representative over a broad base, as well as an efficient communication network are required.
Prof Philip Spies of Creative Futures Network has been appointed consultant and project leader of VISION 2020. He is well-known in agricultural circles and is looking forward to this project with great enthusiasm.
