VinPro Consultant Profile
Cobus van Graan
The production of terrain specific wines, in particular the role played by canopy management and the selection of cultivars, clones and rootstocks, is a viticultural topic that fascinates Cobus van Graan.
Born in Bellville, Cobus spent some time in Cradock during his school career and eventually matriculated in Elgin/Grabouw. As a youngster he used to spend holidays on a farm in the Gamtoos valley, hence his interest in agriculture.
While studying at the Stellenbosch University, he opted for viticulture and oenology and obtained a BSc. Agric. degree in Viticulture and Oenology.
Cobus loves the outdoors. He enjoys working in the garden, loves fly-fishing, diving, golf and riding his motorbike. Socialising with friends and a glass of good wine enjoy high priority in his life.
Cobus is convinced the future lies in quality. "The South African wine industry is considered an international player. As the world market becomes more and more competitive, the wine industry will have to be dynamic to hold its own with regard to competence. Producers will have to be market-oriented and produce grapes of the highest possible quality on each individual vine. The resources and knowledge are certainly available to do so."
