WINETECH
OIV - ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The Annual General Meeting of the OIV (Office International de la Vigne et du Vin) took place in Mainz, Germany, in July. Some of the most important resolutions passed by this world body include the contentious stipulation that organic acids may be added to wine. (The acceptable levels of acid additions have to be determined and finalised before the AGM in Australia in 2001.) The resolution dealing with integrated production of wine (IPW) was also passed and places the South African wine industry in a unique position to benefit from the opportunity. Another interesting resolution that was passed, is that blood will no longer be allowed for fining.

Pictured are some of the South African delegates who attended the seminars and AGM: Jan Booysen (WINETECH), Marius Lamprechts (University of Stellenbosch), Wendy Jonker (Dept. of Agriculture and head of the delegation), Sakkie Pretorius (IWBT), Duimpie (CWSI) and Sue Bayly and André Jonker.

Social visits to a Rhine wine estate and regional cellars offered the opportunity to resume old friendships and make plans for the future. Jan Booysen (WINETECH) socialises with Peter and Jenny Hayes of Rosemount, Australia.
