It all started with his dad, and the truck with which they transported grapes to the cellar. We are talking about Stephan Joubert's love of the vine. Their wine farm against the Langeberge near Bonnievale, Joubertsdal, also played a big role. That is where the crush and vinification process began to fascinate him, and the more he saw, the more he wanted to know.
After matriculating at Paarl Gymnasium, Stephan went to study Viticulture and Oenology at the Stellenbosch University and obtained his BSc Agric degree.
His interests extend far beyond wine. He also enjoys aquatic sports such as skiing and kayaking, "and I like to play touch rugby with my buddies." Nature is another of his inspirations and he enjoys a braai with friends.
He firmly believes that good wine is made in the vineyard. "I am particularly interested in innovative market oriented wine grape production, where terrain and management practices such as irrigation scheduling are used to manage the vineyards with a certain wine style for a specific market in mind. The vineyard is therefore managed for a specific wine goal, which in turn is directly dependent on the demands of the market."
As far as Stephan is concerned, the challenge faced by our wine industry involves adjustment and change. "The industry should adjust to the changing market environment. In practice this means that the marketing strategy should be far more dynamic, with different role players co-operating in many more respects to be successful.
"With regard to viticulture and viniculture, new technology will have to be accepted and applied in practice much more quickly. If we want to remain competitive, we should offer value for money at all times. As a wine country, South Africa is lucky to have a number of different climatic regions where different wine styles may be produced. Our best wines can compete with the best in the world.
"The question is whether we are going to co-operate as South Africans to benefit optimally from this potential. As far as I am concerned, the challenge lies in making a contribution on all levels to ensure that the South African brand is great, the greatest, and market it as such."
