PLANNING

Plan the necessary actions with regard to soil preparation, fumigation, drainage, irrigation and trellis systems in accordance with your long term plan.

IN THE VINEYARD - pay special attention to: Disease control

  • Emphasis on preventive control of downy mildew and oidium
  • Monitor especially after showers of more than 10 mm
Pest control
  • Monitor and control erinose, snails and calanders if economically justified
  • Also monitor early mealy bug (traps now available) and ant movement and control if necessary
Vine development
  • Undertake green shoot development on 2nd leaf and vigorous 1st leaf vineyards
  • Do shoot spacing on young vines where cordon shoots have been developed on the wire
Canopy management
  • It is beneficial and economically viable to begin suckering early at 5 - 10cm shoot length
  • Quality / high income vineyards receive preference
  • Tip budding shoots for evenness
  • Tuck in shoots or use wires for picking up when shoots are approximately 45 - 60 cm
Fertilising
  • Begin fertiliser instalments at ñ 30 cm shoot length - if necessary!
Irrigation
  • Important to monitor soil moisture; water requirement is still very low and irrigate only before flowering if soil moisture is low
  • Cover crops - drag flat if dry enough
FINANCIAL

Contact your agronomist for information about:

  • Purchase of land or farm evaluation.
  • Viability studies and breakeven analyses.
  • Establishment planning and costs.
  • Budgets and cash flow statement.
Compare the budgeted situation with actual expenses as well as with the corresponding month of the previous year on a monthly basis and make adjustments if necessary.
