Wynboer Tips for November
PLANNING
Planning of spring fertilisation programme, irrigation scheduling strategy for the season and schedule contractor for soil to be prepared in December/January.
IN THE VINEYARD - pay special attention to:
Spring fertilisation if required:
- Adult vines according to petiole/leaf or soil analyses and vigour.
- Young vines for development of vine where strong growth is required.
- Producing vineyards, apply before flowering.
Canopy management
- Suckering actions to be completed before flowering.
- The timing of, and positioning of shoots is very important during this period.
Tipping / topping actions
- Regular tipping actions are more important than one severe topping action.
Crop control
- For quality production, bunches on weak shoots (<80 cm) should be removed at an early stage to improve shoot growth.
Disease and pest control
- Preventive control for Oidium as well as Downy Mildew should be a standard practice.
- Monitor pests before considering chemical control.
Irrigation
- Water consumption only increases after set and especially from pea berry stage.
- Monitor soil water content.
- If vigorous growth occurs, judicious irrigation should be applied.
Vine development
- Green shoot development on 1st to 3rd leaf vines to form bearing structure of the vine.
- Crop control is very important on young vines to ensure a productive lifespan.
Cover crops
- Flatten the cover crop. Do not use a shredder or disc.

Contact your agricultural economist for information about:
- Purchase of soil or farm evaluation.
- Viability studies and breakeven analyses.
- Establishment, planning and cost.
- Budgets and cash flow statements.
Compare, on a monthly basis, the budgeted situation with actual expenses as well as with the corresponding month of the previous year and make adjustments if required.
