Wynboer Tips for December

1. Planning

  • Take soil samples and schedule contractor for soil to be prepared in December/January.
  • Schedule plantings and vine orders for the next planting season.
  • Make provision for labour requirements for the harvesting season.
2. In the vineyard

Irrigation:

  • Monitor soil moisture conditions and vine symptoms for irrigation purposes.
  • Irrigation after véraison is important if needed.
Disease control:
  • The emphasis is on preventive control of oidium, downy mildew and botrytis in particular.
Pest control:
  • Monitor mealybug and control where required.
Vine development:
  • Complete forming the cordon (green shoot method) and tipping of shoots.
  • Crop control of young vines in first production season.
Canopy management:
  • Pay attention to tipping actions, canopy density.
  • Pick up trellis wires and position shoots.
  • If canopy is too dense, remove leaves judiciously.
  • Green bunches and those with poor colour to be removed at 80% véraison.
3. Financial

Contact your agricultural economist for information about:

  • Purchase of soil or farm evaluation.
  • Viability studies and breakeven analyses.
  • Establishment, planning and cost.
  • Budgets and cash flow statements.
Compare, on a monthly basis, the budgeted situation with actual expenses as well as with the corresponding month of the previous year and make adjustments if required.
