Wynboer Tips for January

1. Planning

  • Finalise preparations for the harvest - get all machinery and tools ready and make sure you are familiar with the grading system of the recipient of your grapes.
  • Plan and schedule vineyard establishment actions for the current planting year, inter alia soil preparation, and also undertake the necessary establishment investigations and planning for the 2006 planting, so that plant material may be ordered in good time.
  • Order cover crop seed, fertiliser, lime etc. for post-harvest applications.
2. Vineyard programme

Irrigation

  • Irrigate according to the vines' requirements, soil-water measurements and vine water stress symptoms but always take wine goals and expected harvest date into account when decisions are taken regarding irrigation.
Canopy management

  • Tip actively growing vines to benefit translocation flow to bunches.
Disease and pest control

  • Monitor vines continuously for fungal diseases and evaluate effectiveness of spraying programme. Persist with necessary preventive programmes where necessary, but adhere to abstention periods.
  • monitor mealybug and ant activity; control where necessary.
Vine development

  • Remember to pay ongoing attention to young vine development.
Sampling and harvest

  • Start timeously with monitoring of grape ripeness and ensure that harvesting occurs at the right degree of ripeness according to the wine goals.
3. Financial
