Wynboer Tips for June

PLANNING

  • Plan the necessary actions with regard to general maintenance of irrigation systems, farm implements, trellis systems, etc.
  • Draw up weed control programme for the forthcoming season.
IN THE VINEYARD

Pest control

  • Snail control must take place every 2 - 3 weeks - especially after showers.
  • Mark vines infested with mealybug for control.
Pruning
  • Start pruning according to pruning plan.
  • The pruning system must be adapted depending on cultivar, location and wine goal.
  • Keep renewal in mind and treat large pruning wounds.
  • Postpone pruning in frost sensitive areas for as long as possible.
Vine development
  • Vine development must be done by the most experienced pruners.
  • Judge young vines according to vigour and plan a handling strategy for them in consultation with your viticulturist.
Irrigation
  • Irrigate heavily with good quality water to leach out brackish salts where necessary.
Cover crops
  • If required, cover crop must be irrigated and/or receive top dressing.
General
  • Contact your nursery to make arrangements for collection of vines.
  • Irrigation and trellis system must be installed before planting.
  • Remove scion roots around trunks.
Maintenance
  • Replace broken poles, wires and anchors.
  • Tighten loose foliage wires.
  • Repair crooked anchor poles.

Contact your agricultural economist for information about:

  • Viability and economic studies.
  • Presentations on the economics of wine grape cultivation, industry overview, etc.
  • Budgets and financial planning in the light of production cost, establishment cost and other industry parameters.
  • Participation in the production plan/study groups.
