Wynboer Tips for August
PLANNING
Plan herbicide programme as well as spring fertiliser and spraying programmes and order the required products. Always take the IPW guidelines into account.
IN THE VINEYARD
Calibrate spraying pump and fertiliser spreader.
Pest control
- The emphasis should be on correct mealy bug control before budding. Adhere strictly to the prescriptions for winter treatment, for successful control.
- Control snails if problematic.
Pruning
- Vines in frost sensitive areas may be left for final pruning in one single action as late as possible.
- If budding stimulants are applied 4 - 6 weeks before budding, a good synergistic result is obtained provided the pruning (in one action) and application of bud stimulants take place as closely as possible to each other.
Herbicide and/or cultivation
- A full surface spray with a systemic product to control weeds before budding. Familiarise yourself with the requirements for the use of pre-emergent weedicides for successful control.
- Cover crops must be sprayed with weedicide and then preferably flattened to ensure the best retention of dry material.
Planting of vines
- Attempt to finish planting before the end of August.
- Keep replacement vines in plastic bags to use in instances where vines did not take.
Fertilisation
- A fertilisation programme for each block on the farm should be drawn up in consultation with a fertiliser expert and/or viticultural consultant.
Irrigation
- Now is the time for maintenance of the irrigation system
- Supplement soils to field capacity before budding, except in cases where a deficit irrigation strategy might possibly require otherwise.

- Viability and economic studies.
- Presentations on the economics of wine grape cultivation, industry overview, etc.
- Budgets and financial planning in the light of production cost, establishment cost and other industry parameters.
- Participation in the production plan/study groups.
