Wynboer Tips for September

PLANNING

  • Control, repair and clean all irrigation systems and equipment.
  • Calibrate spraying pumps and order plague and disease control products.

IN THE VINEYARD

Planting

  • Keep replacement vines in plastic bags ready to be used in instances where vines did not take.
Disease and plague control
  • Start spraying preventatively from 5 - 10 cm shoot length against fungal diseases such as oidium and downy mildew.
  • Take ant control measures before budding.
  • Lime sulphur against erinose may be applied at the same time, four weeks before budburst.
  • Control snails if problematic.
Irrigation
  • If dry, supplement the soil profile to its full depth before budding.
  • Make use of aids to schedule irrigation as water consumption is limited early in the season.
Fertilisation
  • Wait ± three to four weeks after budding (±15 - 20 cm shoot length) before applying spring fertiliser if at all necessary.
Sucker
  • Start suckering at 5 - 10 cm shoot length on all shoots in undesirable positions.
Soil management
  • Cover crops should be sprayed and preferably flattened to ensure the best retention of dry matter, especially under dry winter conditions.
