PLANNING
Plan your spring fertilisation programme, irrigation scheduling strategy and arrange for a contractor for soil preparation in December/January.
VINEYARD PROGRAMME
Spring fertilisation if required
- On older vines according to leaf and soil analyses and vigour.
- On young vines where vine development is taking place and strong vigour is required.
- In producing vineyards, the last instalment must be applied before flowering.
Canopy management
- Suckering actions must be completed before flowering.
- The timing of shoot positioning with movable foliage wires is very important; do not fall behind with actions.
Tipping/topping actions
- Regular tipping actions at the right stage are more beneficial than severe topping actions.
Crop control
- For quality cultivation, bunches on weak shoots (<30cm) may be removed at an early stage to improve shoot growth.
Disease and pest control
- Preventative control for Oidium as well as Downy mildew.
- Monitor plagues before considering chemical control (ants, mealy bug, snout beetles, snails, etc.)
- Irrigation
- Water consumption of the vine increases from flowering onwards to pea berry stage.
- Monitor soil water content.
- If excessive growth occurs, deficit irrigation may be applied.
Vine development
- Green shoot development on first to third leaf vines to shape trunk, cordons and bearers.
- Crop control is very important on young vines to ensure the life span of good vines.
Cover crops
- If dry, roll or drag flat - do not use shrub beater or disc.

- Presentations on the economics of wine grape cultivation, industry overview, etc.
- Budgets and financial planning in the light of production cost, establishment cost and other industry parameters.
- Participation in the production plan/study groups.
