Wynboer Tips for December

PLANNING

  • Make arrangements for soil preparation (soil samples and contractors) in January/February.
  • Make arrangements for labour requirements during the harvest.
  • Check harvesting equipment/harvester.
VINEYARD PROGRAMME

Irrigation

  • Monitor soil water status and reaction of vineyard to irrigation scheduling.
  • From pea berry stage, ensure that there is moderate moisture stress on vigorously growing vineyards and large berry cultivars.
Disease control
  • Keep up preventive control programme for oidium and downy mildew in particular.
Pest control
  • Monitor mealybug and ants and control where necessary.
Vine development
  • Complete formation of cordons (green shoot method) and tip for development of bearer shoots.
  • Crop control of young vines in first year of production - no bunches on weak shoots (<50 cm).
  • Fertilise where growth is not sufficient.
Canopy management
  • Regular tipping actions to control vigorous growth and to prevent toppling over of canopy.
  • It is very important for foliage wires to be picked up timeously and shoots to be positioned.
  • If canopy is too dense, break leaves out judiciously.
  • Remove green bunches and bunches with poor colour at 80% v‚raison for high quality wine purposes.
  • Also remove gleanings.
