Wynboer Tips for February
1. Planning
- Keep comprehensive records of irrigation, ripening (°B) and production of each block.
- Order seed for cover crop.
- Take regular grape samples to monitor ripening.
2. Vineyard programme
Harvest
- Liaise with your cellar before harvesting any block or switching to another cultivar.
- Pick during the coolest time of day - machine harvest after 2 a.m.
- Do not leave grapes overnight in harvesting bins / crates.
Disease and pest control
- Adhere to abstention periods of registered pesticides.
- Avoid large applications of copper shortly before the harvest.
- Post-harvest disease control for the retention of healthy leaves only.
Irrigation
- Pre-harvest - overly generous water supply and / or water shortages are both detrimental to quality.
- Post-harvest - supplement the soil profile to its full depth.
Fertilisation
- Wait ± three to four weeks after the harvest.
Canopy management
- Tip actively growing shoots in late cultivars.
- Break out leaves where canopy is too dense.
Root pruning
- Only to alleviate compaction, directly after the harvest in alternate rows before applying post-harvest fertilisation and irrigation - soils must be moist for this operation.
3. Financial
Contact your agricultural economist for information about:
- Viability studies and breakeven analyses.
- Presentations on the economics of wine grape cultivation, industry overview, etc.
- Budgets and financial planning in the light of production cost, establishment cost and other industry parameters.
- Participation in the production plan/study groups.
