Wynboer Tips for February

1. Planning

  • Keep comprehensive records of irrigation, ripening (°B) and production of each block.
  • Order seed for cover crop.
  • Take regular grape samples to monitor ripening.
2. Vineyard programme

Harvest

  • Liaise with your cellar before harvesting any block or switching to another cultivar.
  • Pick during the coolest time of day - machine harvest after 2 a.m.
  • Do not leave grapes overnight in harvesting bins / crates.
Disease and pest control
  • Adhere to abstention periods of registered pesticides.
  • Avoid large applications of copper shortly before the harvest.
  • Post-harvest disease control for the retention of healthy leaves only.
Irrigation
  • Pre-harvest - overly generous water supply and / or water shortages are both detrimental to quality.
  • Post-harvest - supplement the soil profile to its full depth.
Fertilisation
  • Wait ± three to four weeks after the harvest.
Canopy management
  • Tip actively growing shoots in late cultivars.
  • Break out leaves where canopy is too dense.
Root pruning
  • Only to alleviate compaction, directly after the harvest in alternate rows before applying post-harvest fertilisation and irrigation - soils must be moist for this operation.
3. Financial
