It is that time of the year again that the 2005/2006 IPW evaluation forms need to be completed and submitted in order to qualify for a 2006 IPW certificate.
For your winery or farm to qualify your completed evaluation form should be submitted to the IPW office before 31 May 2006 [fax to (021) 809-3113] for evaluation and the issuing of your certificate.
Please note that this procedure is now much easier than before as the entire IPW system is now available at www.ipw.co.za and any relevant information/forms can be downloaded. Also note that during 2004, the IPW office sent out green IPW folders (for farms and wineries) to all IPW wineries for distribution.
The good news is that no significant changes were made to the forms for farms (Appendices 1 & 2A, 2B en 2C). Therefore the same evaluation forms can be used and downloaded at www.ipw.co.za (note new codings of chemicals).
Wineries that only receive grapes must complete Appendix 4 and fax it to the IPW office while checking and filing Appendices 1 & 2A, 2B, 2C for farmers delivering grapes to the winery. Estates and private cellars with own farms/grapes must fax Appendices 1 & 2A, 2B en 2C and 4 applicable to the farm and winery to the IPW office, while similarly filing Appendices 1 & 2A, 2B en 2C for farmers delivering grapes to the winery.
The only way that your winery will receive a 2006 IPW Certificate, is by submitting the relevant documentation as set out above and to provide proof that you have either an Authorisation for wastewater management from the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry (DWAF) or your local municipality (if wastewater is disposed into Municipal sewer line) OR fax a copy of a letter to DWAF in which you request a meeting with them on how to responsibly manage wastewater in future, along with the documentation mentioned above, to the IPW office (DWAF contact numbers below). Please include documentation providing proof even if you submitted it recently.

Important: The Wine and Spirit Board recently decided that from January 2009, IPW will be a prerequisite for Wine of Origin Certification. To aid this, subsidised audits/assistance at wineries will increase from 110 during 2005/2006 to 150 during 2006/2007. The system of controllers at larger cellars assisting with IPW on farms will be a huge advantage.
