Wynboer Tips for July

1 Planning

  • Determine and plan spring fertilisation requirements and order fertilisers.
  • Make arrangements with nursery for the collection of vines.

  • Adhere to pruning programme and monitor execution of pruning practices for neatness and correctness.
  • Treat pruning wounds for fungal infection ("eutypa").
Weed control:
  • Control of berm areas (between vines in a row) should take place at the end of the month.
Plantings:
  • Planting of new vines - familiarise yourself with the treatment of vines before planting, method of making plant holes and the actual planting action.
  • Leave vines in water for at least 24 hours before planting.
  • Vines from refrigerated conditions should preferably be kept in water at the nursery for 2 days before collection and at the producer for 3 days before planting.
  • Only cut back long roots before planting.
  • Make sure plant holes are large enough.
Trellis systems:
  • Repair and improve trellis systems.
Disease and pest control:
  • Monitor snail activity and control where necessary.
  • Plan your disease control programme in conjunction with your chemical representative.
