Wynboer Tips for February

PLANNING

  • Keep comprehensive records, including irrigation, ripening (°B) and production of each block.
  • Order seed for cover crop.
VINEYARD PROGRAMME

Pressing

  • Take regular grape samples to monitor ripening.
  • Liaise with your cellar before harvesting any block or switching over to another cultivar.
  • Harvest at the coolest time of day - machine harvest after 2 a.m.
  • Do not leave grapes overnight in pressing bin.
Disease and pest control
  • Adhere to safety periods of registered products.
  • Avoid high applications of copper shortly before the harvest - 24 days abstention period.
  • Post-harvest disease control only to sustain healthy leaves.
Irrigation
  • Pre-harvest - excessive water supply as well as water shortages are detrimental to quality.
  • Post-harvest - supplement the soil profile to its full depth.
Fertilisation
  • Wait ± three to four weeks after the harvest.
Canopy management
  • Tip actively growing shoots in late cultivars.
  • Break out leaves if foliage is too dense.
  • Drop poorly coloured bunches at 80% véraison.
Root pruning
  • Only to alleviate compaction, directly post-harvest in alternate rows before applying post-harvest fertilisation and irrigation, if allowed by soil climate.
