Wynboer Tips for June
1. Planning
Plan the necessary actions with regard to general maintenance of irrigation systems, farm implements, trellis systems, etc.
- Replace broken poles + wires
- Tighten sagging foliage wires
- Repair slanted anchor poles
Plan weed control programme for coming season
2. In the vineyard
Pest control
- Snail bait should still be applied every 2-3 weeks - especially after showers
- Ensure that mealybug infested vines are marked for control purposes
Pruning
- Start pruning according to pruning planning
- The pruning system must be adapted to cultivar, location and wine goal
- Keep renewal in mind
- Postpone pruning in ripe sensitive areas for as long as possible
- It is sound practice to treat pruning wounds with biological or chemical wound-seal products
- If using budding stimulants, prune in one action approximately 4 weeks before budding. Application of budding stimulant should take place as soon as possible after pruning
- Regularly disinfect pruning scissors
Vine development
- Vine development should be done by the most experienced pruners
- Judge young vines according to growth and plan strategy to be used for the handling of young vines in conjunction with viticulturist
Irrigation
- Heavy irrigation with good quality water for saline leeching where necessary
Cover crops
- If necessary irrigate cover crops and/or apply top dressing where needed
General
- Contact nursery about arrangements to collect vines
- Irrigation and trellis system could be installed before planting
- Remove scion roots
3. Financial
