Wynboer Tips for April

PLANNING

  • Do a thorough evaluation of the viability of each block and reevaluate your long term planning with regard to uprootings and plantings.
  • Obtain advice on establishment in collaboration with soil, viticulturist and winemaker.
  • Confirm vine order for 2008 and order vines for 2009 from your nursery.
  • Update records of each vineyard block, e.g. productions, grape analyses, vigour, irrigation schedules, etc.
  • Soil analyses of each block should be done every 3 years.
  • Evaluate the actual wine goal compared to the intended wine goal per block.
  • Check whether cultivar planning is still in line with cellar/market demands.
VINEYARD PROGRAMME

Cultivation

  • Ensure that phosphate levels in the topsoil are correct.
  • Weed control of perennial weeds with spot spraying.
  • Prepare a shallow seed bed for cover crop and ghrop in seed after sowing.
Post-harvest fertilisation
  • Apply N-fertiliser according to vigour and the other elements according to soil analyses.
Post-harvest irrigation
  • Monitor soil moisture conditions and irrigate where necessary. Remember that vines with a large canopy still have moderate water consumption.
Disease and pest control
  • Post-harvest spraying programme is necessary for the retention of leaves where oidium, downy mildew and erinose infections occur.
  • It’s a good time for nematode control – make sure the ‘bankies’ are free of any weeds before treatment.
  • Mark mealybug infested vines for control in winter.
Uprooting of vineyards
  • Take out as many old roots as possible, remove all plant material from the soil and incinerate.
General maintenance and repair
  • Good time for general maintenance and repair of infrastructure (buildings, roads, vehicles and implements).
