Wynboer Tips for September
PLANNING
- Check, repair, flush and clean all irrigation systems and equipment.
- Calibrate spraying pumps and order pesticides and disease control products.
- Order fertilisers for spring fertilisation programme.
IN THE VINEYARD
Planting vines
- Have replacement vines in plastic bags on hand to be used where vines died.
Disease and pest control
- Start spraying preventatively against fungal diseases such as oidium and downy mildew from 5 - 10 cm shoot length.
- Lime sulphur against erinose may be applied 4-6 weeks before bud burst.
- Control snails if problematic.
- Apply ant control measures. Treat trunks, poles and anchor wires.
Irrigation
- Supplement the soil profile to its full depth before budding if winter rain was insufficient.
- Remember that water consumption early in the season is very low.
- Make use of soil-water and plant monitoring aids.
Fertilisation
- Wait ± three to four weeks after budding (±15 - 20 cm shoot length) before applying spring fertilisation if at all necessary.
Sucker
- Start suckering early, at 3-5cm shoot length, by removing all shoots in undesirable positions on trunks and cordons between spurs.
Soil management
- Under dry winter conditions cover crops should be sprayed with a chemical weed killer and then preferably flattened to ensure the best retention of dry material.
- If wet winter and spring conditions prevail - only spray the berms and allow cover crop to grow, dry out partially and then roll flat.
- Try to build up the cover crop or a mulch on the berm, especially on lean, poor and low water retaining soils.
