Wynboer Tips for February
PLANNING
- Keep comprehensive records of each block’s irrigation, grape samples and production.
- Order seed for cover crop.
VINEYARD PROGRAMME
Harvest
- Take regular grape samples to monitor ripening.
- Liaise with your cellar before harvesting any block or changing over to another cultivar.
- Harvest at the coolest time of the day - machine harvest after 2 a.m.
- Do not leave the grapes overnight in bins or crates.
Disease and pest control
- Observe withholding periods of registered products.
- Avoid high applications of copper shortly before the harvest - 24 days' withholding period.
- Post-harvest disease control only for the retention of healthy leaves.
Irrigation
- Pre-harvest - abundant water supply as well as water shortages are detrimental to quality.
- Post-harvest - supplement the soil profile to its full depth.
- Soil moisture monitoring and vineyard observation are important aids.
Fertilisation
- Wait ± three to four weeks after the harvest.
Canopy management
- Tip actively growing shoots in late cultivars.
- Break out leaves if the canopy is too dense, but be careful not to expose the grapes.
- Drop bunches with poor colour at 80% veraison.
Root pruning
- Only to counter compaction, directly after the harvest in alternative rows before post-harvest fertilisation and irrigation, provided the soil climate permits it.
