Cost of trellis systems

Franco le Roux

Franco le Roux, agricultural economist, VinPro

The capital outlay in respect of trellis systems (excluding labour) has become an increasingly bigger component of total establishment cost, seeing that the cost of material has increased considerably over the past two years.

The cost of material for the erection of trellis systems has increased by an average of 68% since August 2007. The price of round tar poles in lengths of 1.2 m to 3.0 m (50 mm to 150 mm diameter) has increased by 55%, while the price of split tar poles in lengths of 1.2 m to 3.6 m (75 mm to 125 mm diameter) has increased by an average of 58%.

In the review period the price of anchor, steel and tie wire has increased by an average of 119%. These enormous increases may be ascribed, inter alia, to the worldwide decrease in steel production.

The prices of zinc building hoops (1 kg), 12 mm round iron (6 m lengths), cement and staples have increased by 34%, 320%, 43% and 47% respectively.

The cost of the erection of trellis systems (new material) is summarised in the table below (click to enlarge).
