Wynboer Tips for April

PLANNING

  • Do a thorough evaluation of each block’s profitability and re-evaluate your long term planning with regard to uprootings and plantings.
  • Evaluate the actual wine goal compared to the intended wine goal per block.
  • Ensure that records of each vineyard block are updated, e.g. production figures, grape analyses, vigour, irrigation schedules, etc.
  • Ensure that cultivar planning is still in line with the demands of the market.
  • Obtain establishment advice in collaboration with soil scientist, viticulturist and winemaker.
  • Confirm vine order for 2009 and order vines for 2010 from your nursery.
  • Soil analyses to be done in each block every 3 years.
VINEYARD PROGRAMME

Cultivation

  • Weed control of perennial weeds with spot spraying.
  • Prepare a shallow seed bed for cover crop and use grubber to cover seeds.
  • Ensure that phosphate levels in the topsoil are sufficient.
Post-harvest fertilisation
  • Apply N fertilisation according to vigour and the other elements according to soil analyses.
  • Application to commence about one month after the harvest.
Post-harvest irrigation
  • Monitor soil moisture conditions and irrigate where necessary. Vines with a vigorous canopy still have moderate water consumption.
Disease and pest control
  • Post-harvest spraying programme is essential to retain leaves in instances where oidium, downy mildew and erinose infections occur.
  • Good time for nematode control - ensure that the berms are weed-free before treatment.
  • Mark vines infested with mealybug for control in winter.
Uprooting of vines
  • Remove as much as possible of the old vine roots. All plant material must be removed from the soil and from existing vineyards and burnt.
General maintenance and repair
  • Good time for general maintenance and repair of infrastructure (buildings, roads, vehicles and implements).
