Wynboer Tips for June

PLANNING

Undertake general maintenance of irrigation systems, farm implements, trellis systems, e.g.

  • Replace broken poles and wires.
  • Tighten sagging foliage wires.
  • Repair slanted anchor poles.
Discuss and plan weed control programme for the coming season with chemical representative.

VINEYARD PROGRAMME

Pest control

  • Snail bait should still be applied every 2 - 3 weeks – especially after showers.
  • Ensure that mealybug infested vines are marked for control purposes.
Pruning
  • Start pruning according to pruning planning and not until at least 50% leaf drop has taken place.
  • The pruning system must be adapted to cultivar, location and wine objective.
  • Keep renewal in mind.
  • Postpone pruning in frost sensitive areas for as long as possible.
  • It is sound practice to treat pruning wounds with biological or chemical wound-seal products.
  • If using bud-breaking stimulants, prune in one action approximately 4 weeks before budburst. Application of bud-breaking stimulant should take place as soon as possible after pruning.
  • Regularly disinfect pruning secateurs.
  • Prune young blocks before older virus infested vines/blocks.
Vine development
  • Judge young vines according to growth and plan strategy to be used for the development of young vines in conjunction with viticulturist.
  • Vine development should be done by the most experienced pruners.
Irrigation
  • Heavy irrigation with good quality water for saline leeching where winter rain is insufficient.
Cover crops
  • If necessary irrigate cover crops and/or apply top dressing where needed.
General
  • Contact nursery about arrangements to collect vines.
  • Irrigation and trellis system should preferably be installed before planting.
  • Remove scion roots.
